Even today – and especially in the West – death remains in many respects one of the great taboos. Yet it has long been a subject of special interest, not to mention a source of inspiration, for artists of every kind.

In this illustrated talk, Geoff Andrew, Head of Film Programme at BFI Southbank and regular contributor to 'Sight & Sound' magazine, will explore how various aspects of human mortality have been represented in painting and in the cinema.
