Paolo Veronese and Henri Matisse lived four hundred years apart, yet they are often referred to as two of the great colourists of all time. Both painters have also been described – in positive and negative terms – in relation to their apparently 'decorative' style.

Coinciding with two major exhibitions on Veronese and Matisse in London – at the National Gallery and Tate Modern respectively – the curators of the two shows compare the art of these two painters.
