The Seventh Seal
Ingmar Bergman, 1957
B&W, certificate PG, 96 mins
Saturday 18 August, 2.30pm
Sainsbury Wing Theatre
This medieval allegory of faith and doubt takes its title from the Book of Revelations in the Bible: 'And when he had opened the seventh seal, there was silence in heaven about the space of half an hour'.
From the dramatic first scene on a deserted beach, where a knight returning from the Crusades challenges Death to a game of chess, the film is full of Bergman's characteristically poetic imagery. On the journey home to his wife, the knight contemplates his war-ravaged faith.
