The turbulent period of Italy's unification in the early 1860s is revealed through the eyes of an aristocratic Sicilian family threatened by the political upheavals.
The ageing Prince of Salina (Burt Lancaster) must reluctantly acknowledge that one age is giving way to another. He watches as his beloved nephew Tancredi (Alain Delon) sets off to fight with Garibaldi's revolutionary red shirts, then falls in love with the daughter of a boorish merchant.
From the graphic opening battle scene to the extended ballroom sequence at the end, this is a gorgeous evocation of an era.
