La Kermesse héroïque (Carnival in Flanders) is the farcical tale of a small Flemish town in the early 17th century facing Spanish occupation.

The men of the town, hearing of Spanish atrocities, choose to play dead. Meanwhile, the mayor's wife takes action, rallying the women to seduce the Spanish duke and his troops with their hospitality and feminine charms. The result is no taxes for a year and an empowered female population.

The work of Flemish masters, such as Frans Hals, inspired the backdrop to this amusing take on the virtues of collaboration.
