The Godfather

Francis Ford Coppola, 1972
Colour, certificate 18, 175 mins

Saturday 21 July, 2.30pm
Sainsbury Wing Theatre

Coppola's epic exploration of family, honour and private enterprise is composed in shades of black, brown and gold, using shadowy cinematography.

The film's opening sequence sets up the contrast between the dispassionate business dealings of the Corleone family and their warm loyalty: action moves between the sepulchral study of Don Vito (Marlon Brando) and his daughter's wedding in the bright sunshine outside.

Vito's quest to make his family respectable seems doomed when his youngest son Michael (Al Pacino), a decorated war hero and lawyer, becomes caught up in a dispute with a rival family.
