Black Narcissus
Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger, 1947
Colour, certificate PG, 100 mins
Saturday 7 July, 2.30pm
Sainsbury Wing Theatre
A group of Anglo-Catholic nuns set up a school and hospital in a remote Himalayan village. Their only English contact is the arrogant Mr Dean (David Farrar) who helps them to communicate with the local people while creating much of the film's erotic tension.
Dramatically composed shots and a remarkable use of light underscore the nuns' varied but profound responses to the inhospitable environment.
Actress Kathleen Byron (Sister Ruth) has remarked of cinematographer Jack Cardiff (who cites Rembrandt as an influence): 'He gave me half of my performance with the lighting.'
Short:
The Firefly Man
