Il Posto (The Job)

Ermanno Olmi, 1961
B&W, cert U, 93 mins

Saturday 16 August, 2.30pm
Sainsbury Wing Theatre

In the development of this story, Olmi displays his quiet mastery of human interaction. Nineteen-year-old Domenico (Sandro Panseri) leaves his village and family to take up a clerk’s job with a firm in Milan, a move that mirrors Italy’s shift from its agricultural roots to become a modern urban, bureaucratised nation.

Olmi shows great sensitivity in tracing Domenico’s early experiences of adulthood and city life. In one cafe scene he befriends young colleague Antonietta (Loredana Detto). Olmi elicits sexual tension in the sharing of a coffee spoon, and real humour in the problem of where to dispose of the cups.
