Giulietta degli spiriti (Juliet of the Spirits)
Federico Fellini, 1965
Colour, certificate 15, 137 mins
Saturday 28 June, 2.30pm
Sainsbury Wing Theatre
Fellini’s first feature in colour is a spectacularly ornate vision in which he weaves the fantastical with the everyday.
The director’s wife, Giulietta Masina, stars as Juliet, a demure housewife who suspects that her husband is having an affair.
In an increasingly confused and unhappy state of mind, Juliet seeks both practical and spiritual solutions: alongside hiring a private detective, she attends an eccentric neighbour’s party, where she makes tentative steps towards a kind of liberation.
