United We Stand film season. October - November 2007

La Commare secca (The Grim Reaper)

Bernardo Bertolucci, 1962
B&W, cert 12, 93 mins

Saturday 12 July, 2.30pm
Sainsbury Wing Theatre

With this first feature, made when he was 21, Bertolucci established a personal signature with his use of non-actors and a complete absence of bourgeois morality and taste.

The story centres on a police enquiry into the brutal murder of a prostitute, whose body is shown in the film’s opening shot. But Bertolucci’s style is equally marked by sensuality, which is revealed in the lyrical soundtrack and slow pan across the young woman’s prostrate body.
