Untold Scandal

E J-Yong, 2003
Colour, cert 18, 124 mins

Saturday 31 May, 2.30pm
Sainsbury Wing Theatre

In this poignant version of Choderlos de Laclos’ novel 'Les Liaisons Dangereuses', E J-Yong transposes the tale of seduction and deception to 18th-century Korea:

"I like creating a clash between conflicting elements… the concept of ‘scandal’ and traditional Korean dramas, Western music and Korean aesthetics".

The sumptuous visuals afforded by late Chosun dynasty dress (the director added to the traditional palette) and the intensity of that culture’s social observances, heighten the erotic candour of the aristocratic libertines.

Avoiding overt farce, the climax of this game of love is emotional and affecting.
