Hidden

Michael Haneke, 2005
Colour, cert 15, 109 mins

Saturday 24 May, 2.30pm
Sainsbury Wing Theatre

In Haneke’s psychological videotape thriller, murky intrigue insidiously invades a professional couple’s bright apartment and the reassuring momentum of their city lives. But as the story develops, the threat, it emerges, is from within.

Ostensibly a critique of surveillance culture, Haneke in fact offers a tract on individual responsibility and trust that is far more disturbing: the couple’s secret observer does not seek to reveal what can be seen and recorded but to expose the couple (Daniel Auteuil and Juliette Binoche) to deeply concealed personal truths.
