In this assured martial arts epic, Zhang transports a high-profile cast, including Jet Li and Maggie Cheung, to the 3rd century BC, when the land of China was divided into seven warring states.

An elaborate plot structure based on flashback and shifting perspectives works to engage us in the story’s moral heart: a questioning of what constitutes a hero.

But it is the luscious visuals that really capture the imagination: sweeping vistas and stunning fight scenes draped in diaphanous robes and narrative colour.
