Abstract

The comparison of two paintings done in different techniques by the same artist demonstrates the significance of using different materials to achieve particular effects. Broadly similar pigments were found in both the oil on oak panel and glue tempera tüchlein on linen by Dieric Bouts. Technical examinations of both pictures, The Virgin and Child and The Entombment, gave information on their supports, grounds, underdrawings, media, and paint layers.
