From the film-maker:
I was struck by the way the colours of the sunset looked when I saw this painting. The oil on the wood made the colours look especially saturated and rich. The painting is beautiful, yet there is a simplicity about the way it was painted. Artists in this period painted on wood because it was more portable and sturdy than paper and they could quickly capture the differences in the light. I simply wanted to capture a beautiful sunset, as Diaz de la Peña did. The image of the sunset was what inspired me to write the script, and it also ended up working as a metaphor in the story.
