- The maximum group size per guide/lecturer is 30.
- Children under 16 years must be supervised at all times and a ratio of at least one adult to 10 children is required.
The National Gallery would like your group visit to be an enjoyable and rewarding experience. To help make everyone's visit as pleasant as possible, please note the following guidelines:
When you Arrive...
In the Gallery...
- Please wear your badge at all times while you are in the Gallery.
- Due to overcrowding around some works we ask that you spend no longer than 20 minutes in front of any one picture.
- Please note that you may be asked to to move on from small galleries if they become full.
- We will do our best to accomodate the needs of your group in our cloakrooms but please note that you may be directed to use certain ones when the Gallery is busy.
- In the event of an emergency, please follow instructions from a member of security staff.
The Gallery regrets that...
- Lecturing in temporary exhibitions is not permitted.
- Stools are not provided.
- Groups are not permitted to join the public guided tours.
- We cannot offer lunch room facilities other than our restaurant and café.
Safety of Works of Art
Please ensure that your group does not:
- Touch the paintings
- Run or shout in the Gallery
- Step or lean over the security barriers
- Use cameras, tape recorders or mobile phones
Sketching
- Sketching is permitted throughout the Gallery, provided the materials used will not make a mess.
- Please be aware that staff may move sketchers if they are in the way of other visitors.

ArtStart
- The ArtStart facility on Level 1 of the Sainsbury Wing and the Espresso bar in the East Wing is a free service for all visitors.
- Supervised groups are welcome, but please be aware that there are a limited number of terminals and other visitors may be waiting.
