Frequently Asked Questions: About Research

2. How should I start my research?

If a tutor or teacher is supervising you it is best to discuss your project with them and ask what they advise before going any further. It is useful to spend time planning your essay or project before contacting the National Gallery Information Department.

You may like to consider the availability of works by a particular artist in UK public collections, especially if your study requires you look at works of art at first hand rather than in reproduction. Always check your school, college or local public library for books on the artist you are studying and check if there is a local gallery or museum that holds works that would be helpful to you. Before visiting a gallery or museum it is advisable to check that what you need to see is currently on display.
