7. What are the mosaics in the Vestibule of the Main Entrance?
The National Gallery mosaics were designed and made by the artist Boris Anrep (1885-1969). The cycle was produced from the mid-1920s to the 1950s and shows 'The Awakening of the Muses'; 'The Modern Virtues'; 'The Labours of Life' and 'The Pleasures of Life'. One of the most striking features is Anrep's use of contemporary figures such as Virginia Woolf as Clio, the Muse of History, and Greta Garbo as Melpomene, the Muse of Tragedy, in the cycle 'The Awakening of the Muses'. Sir Winston Churchill is shown as 'Defiance'; Dame Margot Fonteyn as 'Delectation' and Bertrand Russell as 'Lucidity' in the 'Modern Virtues'.
