6. What are the sculptures outside the Gallery?
On the lawns outside the Gallery there is a bronze sculpture of James II (1633-1701) from the studio of Grinling Gibbons, and a replica of the statue of George Washington (1732-1799) by Jean-Antoine Houdon, presented by the Commonwealth of Virginia.
The sculptures on the exterior of the National Gallery's Main Building are redundant sculptures left over from the creation of Marble Arch. The sculptures over the entrance are by John Charles Rossi. At the east end of the building is a figure of 'Britannia/Minerva' by John Flaxman (1755-1826).
