5. Who are the previous Directors of the National Gallery?

The post of Director was established in 1855, 31 years after the Gallery was founded. The Director was given a strategic role and his duties included selecting pictures for the collection and managing their arrangement, description and conservation. Before the post of Director was established, the Keeper of the National Gallery was responsible for all routine administrative and supervisory matters in the Gallery.
