Workshop of the Master of the Life of the Virgin: 'Saints Augustine, Hubert, Ludger (?) and Gereon (?)'
This painting is part of the group: Two Shutters from the Werden Altarpiece

Explore the paintings

This is the outside-left shutter of an altarpiece from the Abbey of Werden near Essen in Germany. Both wings are in the National Gallery Collection, though the fronts and backs have been separated. It is not known what formed the centrepiece of the altarpiece.

The shutters were produced in the workshop of the leading Cologne painter known as the Master of the Life of the Virgin. Ludger was the founder of the Abbey of Werden, in about 800.
