Workshop of Joachim Patinir: 'Landscape with the Rest on the Flight into Egypt'

Explore the paintings

In the background is the Massacre of the Innocents which was carried out by Herod's soldiers and from which the Holy Family had fled. In the left background is the Miracle of the Corn, according to which corn sprang up to deceive Herod's officers during the Flight into Egypt. The figure at the right may be Saint Joseph.

The painting has in the past been catalogued as ascribed to Patinir, but it appears to be inferior in quality to works such as 'Saint Jerome in a Rocky Landscape' which can be associated with his hand.
