Willem Buytewech the Younger: 'A Dune Landscape'

Explore the paintings

Buytewech's paintings are rare and nothing is known about his training. He was born in Rotterdam, where he was apparently active as a landscape and figure painter. This work strongly recalls the dune landscapes of Jan Wijnants (died 1684), to whom the painting was once attributed. There are also works by Wijnants in the National Gallery's Collection.
