Ugolino di Nerio: 'Two Angels'
This painting is part of the group: The Santa Croce Altarpiece
This fragment showing two angels in the spandrels was originally placed above a figure of Saint Francis, now lost, on the principal tier (second section from the right) of the high altarpiece of S. Croce, Florence. Each of the spandrel angels in the altarpiece was distinctively different. Some of the main tier panels from the altarpiece survive (Berlin, Gemäldegalerie).

Beneath the spandrel is part of the main tier, from which the gold and gesso have been scraped, revealing fragments of the layer of linen beneath.
