Lot and his daughters hid in the mountains after the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah. Fearing to die without children the women got Lot drunk, and tricked him into getting them pregnant. Their children founded the tribes of Moabites and Ammonites. (Genesis 19). In the background, Lot's wife as a pillar of salt; left, the flames of Sodom.
There are engraved and painted treatments of this subject by Lucas or in a related style. None exactly corresponds to this painting, which is comparable in style to Lucas's early engravings.
