Studio of Pieter Neeffs the Elder: 'View of a Chapel at Evening'

Explore the paintings

The church has not been identified, and may be an invention of the artist. Candles are being lit on the altar and a service (probably Benediction if it is evening) is about to begin. The painting on the high altar is of the Holy Family. Such architectural interiors were much admired in the 17th century.

This is a a variant of the left half of 'An Evening Service in a Church' by Pieter Neeffs and Bonaventura Peeters. The figures are by a different hand, perhaps in the style of Pieter Snayers (1582 - 1667). The costumes indicate a date in the early 1640s. In the 18th and 19th centuries this painting was attributed to Hendrick van Steenwyck.
