The Archduke Albert of Austria (1559 - 1621) was appointed Governor of the Netherlands in 1595, and from 1598 became joint sovereign of the Seventeen Provinces with his wife, the Infanta Isabella. Rubens was appointed their court painter in 1609, but excused from living in Brussels.

A 'Portrait of the Infanta Isabella' forms a pendant to this work.
