Sodoma: 'Saint Jerome in Penitence'
Saint Jerome is shown in his penitential retreat in the Syrian wilderness, where he retired around 374-6. The Bible, which he later translated into Latin from the original Greek and Hebrew, is propped up on a skull in front of him and he is accompanied by the lion from whose paw, according to legend, he drew out a thorn.
