John Julius Angerstein (1735 - 1823) was a banker and collector who was instrumental in the development of Lloyds as a great insurance house. He was of German origin, but lived in England from about 1750. His collection was bought for the nation in 1824 by the government of Lord Liverpool and formed the original nucleus of the National Gallery.

A later portrait of him by Sir Thomas Lawrence, also in the Collection 'John Julius Angerstein, aged over 80', was painted after his death in 1823.
