Sebastiano Ricci: 'Esther before Ahasuerus'

Explore the paintings

Esther, the Jewish Queen of King Ahasuerus, speaks to the King to save her people from persecution. Ahasuerus holds out to Esther his golden sceptre, a sign that she may speak. The figure at the far right is perhaps intended for Haman, the enemy of the Jews. (Esther 5: 1-2).

This is probably the picture recorded in the 18th century in an engraving by Pietro Monaco as belonging to Anton Maria Zanetti, the Venetian engraver and connoisseur.
