The National Gallery Catalogues

Scholarly research into our collection, and bringing the results of that research to a wider public, lie at the heart of the National Gallery’s role.

The Gallery is undertaking a long-term cataloguing programme in which curators, scientists and conservators systematically re-examine every painting, using the latest scientific methods. This research is being published in book form in a series of collection catalogues generously supported by the Arthur and Holly Magill Foundation.

The Gallery is now also making selected entries from new catalogues available online, in advance of publication and free of charge.

Recent titles

  • ‘The Sixteenth Century Italian Paintings Volume III: Bologna and Ferrara’ by Nicholas Penny and Giorgia Mancini
No gallery outside Italy represents the extraordinary paintings made in Ferrara in the early 16th century as well as the National Gallery in London. This catalogue presents a total of 44 works, among which are an extensive group of paintings by Garofalo, representing his entire range as an artist, and many exquisite and grotesque miniature narratives by Mazzolino, a large masterpiece by the short-lived genius known as Ortolano and some of the most dazzling paintings by the eccentric Dosso Dossi. The collection also includes two altarpieces and the highly original Concert by Lorenzo Costa, as well as the Buonvisi altarpiece, the finest late work by Francesco Francia, the leading artist in Bologna in this period.
