Pieter Codde: 'Portrait of a Man, a Woman and a Boy in a Room'

Explore the paintings

In the background is a landscape tapestry. The painted landscape over the fireplace is in the style of the Haarlem School of the 1630s. The door in the left background leads to a room with contains a chair and a bed.

Pieter Codde, who worked in Amsterdam, painted a number of family groups in the 1640s. It has been suggested (on the basis of comparison with engravings by Pontius after Codde) that the sitters are Hendricus Meursius and Judith Cotermans with their son. However, the resemblances are not very close.
