Philips Wouwermans: 'The Interior of a Stable'

Explore the paintings

Wouwermans is chiefly known for his landscapes with horses and figures. Yet he also frequently painted stable interiors such as this one. There are comparable examples in Cambridge (Fitzwilliam Museum), Dresden (Staatliche Kunstsammlungen) and Munich (Alte Pinakothek). Here, elegantly dressed riders are returning from an excursion and are being met by their horses' grooms in the stable. The viewer's eye is drawn to the white horse in the middle of the room. The inclusion of a white horse like this one is Wouwermans's trademark. It can be found in nearly all of his paintings.
