Philips Koninck: 'An Extensive Landscape with a Road by a River'
The location of this panoramic view has not been identified, and may well be imaginary. The deep recession of the seemingly endless landscape is evoked not only through the traditional means of the winding road, but also by the varied application of the paint. While the foreground is painted in a broad, even rough manner, the middle distance is represented in considerable detail and the background with bold strokes of pure colour - thus suggesting the differential focus with which the eye perceives a flat landscape.

Koninck, an Amsterdam artist and possibly a pupil of Rembrandt, is principally known for this type of panoramic landscape which he imbued with unprecedented tranquility and grandeur.
