This work combines a still life of dead fish in the foreground with a genre scene of figures in the background. This painting was presented as the work of Eugène Isabey and Philippe Rousseau. The background figures are possibly by Isabey, but there is no record of collaboration between the two artists. Certainly Rousseau was influenced by Isabey, and this work seems indebted, in terms of subject and treatment, with the latter's 'Fish Market, Dieppe' of 1845.
