Paolo da San Leocadio: 'The Virgin and Child with Saints'

Explore the paintings

The Virgin and Child are seated at the entrance to a walled garden, frequently a symbol of the Virgin's purity. On the right, Saint Catherine of Alexandria and, further off, the seated figure of Saint Agatha with another female saint. Through a distant archway Saint Joseph enters the garden.

The painting has been cut down at the top and on the left, and may once have formed part of a small altarpiece.

The artist was an Italian who worked in Spain, for much of the time in Valencia, and was considerably influenced by the Spanish taste for Netherlandish painting.
