This painting is part of the group: The Four Ages of Man

Room A: Paintings after 1600

A girl pulling on a stocking at the right is attended by a young man standing by her. The centre of attention in the room is another girl bedecked in flowers who admires herself in a mirror.

This is the second in a series of four canvases by Lancret (all in the Collection) which represent the Four Ages of Man - 'Childhood', 'Youth', 'Maturity', and 'Old Age'. The subject of 'Childhood' is play. The 'games' in 'Youth' have a more amorous purpose.
