Nicolaes Maes: 'A Little Girl rocking a Cradle'

Explore the paintings

Maes was a pupil of Rembrandt but abandoned his master's style and subject matter in the early 1650s. By 1654 he was painting small domestic interiors such as this one in a strongly individual style. He continued to paint genre scenes of this type until 1659, after which he confined himself to portraiture.
