Netherlandish: 'Saint Ambrose with Ambrosius van Engelen (?)'
This painting has a reverse

Explore the paintings

In the 17th century, a triptych of 1520 was in the Premonstratensian Abbey of Le Parc, near Louvain. It showed the Virgin and Child, Saints Ambrose and Augustine, and Abbot Ambrose.

This work may be the right wing of it, and the donor may thus be Ambrosius van Engelen (born 1481, abbot 1515, died 1543), who used the device on the reverse of the panel. It was also used by the abbey.
