The subject is unclear. The characters are poorly dressed, but the boy, who is wearing only a shirt, is holding a pair of shoes. The man and woman to the right hold shirts. It has been suggested that it may be the Clothing of the Naked, combined with one or two of the other Acts of Charity - Comforting the Dying, and possibly Feeding the Hungry. If this is the case, then the other acts would have occupied one or two other similar panels.
The work is presumably part of a larger ensemble, perhaps part of a predella.
