The sitter has not been identified, but her dress dates the portrait to the 1570s. Around her neck she wears a piece of coral, a common gift to children, believed to protect them from evil; the carnations on her headdress may serve them same purpose, but the reason she carries the cherries is unknown.
The artist is close to Martin de Vos, who was working in Antwerp at this period.
