The painter of this unusual portrait clearly shared Rembrandt’s fascination with the characterful features of old age. The woman’s time-weathered face, and even the growth over her left eye, are recorded with precision and unsparing realism.

Several paintings by the same hand are signed with the initials ‘I. S.’, but no further identification has been made.
