The Volscians are besieging Rome (left background). Coriolanus, after being exiled from the city, is acting as their general and is preparing to attack. He was persuaded to desist by Valeria, his mother Volumnia, his wife Virgilia and his children. (Plutarch, 'Life of Coriolanus').
