Master of Liesborn: 'Saints John the Evangelist, Scholastica and Benedict'
This painting is part of the group: The Liesborn Altarpiece
This painting is a fragment of the Crucifixion, from the central panel of the Liesborn high altarpiece. This showed Christ crucified with the Virgin and Saints on either side, and angels above against a gold background.

Saint Benedict is shown as an abbot, his sister Scholastica as an abbess. The crook of her crozier is ornamented with the Sacrifice of Isaac, a common parallel to the Crucifixion.

For fuller details of the altarpiece, several parts of which are preserved in the Collection, see 'The Annunciation' by the Master of Liesborn.
