Marco Marziale: 'The Virgin and Child with Saints'

The Virgin is enthroned before a cloth of honour with the Christ Child upon her lap, beneath a mosaic-encrusted dome.The saints from left to right are Saints Gall (on whose crozier the Baptism of Christ and Saint Paul are depicted), John the Baptist, James and Bartholomew Saint Bartholomew (who holds his attribute, the butcher's knife by which he was flayed in his martyrdom). Before the throne a child plays a lute.

This painting was made as the high altarpiece of the church of S. Gallo, Cremona.
