Marco Basaiti: 'The Virgin and Child'

Explore the paintings

The Child Jesus stands on the parapet. He is steadied by the Virgin Mary who is seen against a cloth of Honour. This painting is thought to be an early work, and was probably painted for private devotion.

Basaiti, who was active in Venice in the early 16th century, is noted for his sharp-edged and clearly defined forms. The attitude and gesture of the infant Christ remind us that paintings of this kind were often hung quite high in Venetian homes.
