Ludolf Bakhuizen: 'Dutch Men-of-war off Enkhuizen'

Explore the paintings

After the two van de Veldes left for England in 1672, Bakhuizen was the leading marine painter in Amsterdam. Here, he shows Dutch men-of-war - the nearer has the arms of Amsterdam on her stern - sailing in the Zuider Zee off the port of Enkhuizen. The city, seen from the south-east, is surrounded by its sea wall, and can be identified by the tall tower of the Zuiderkerk.
