Ludolf Bakhuizen: 'An English Vessel and a Man-of-war in a Rough Sea'

Explore the paintings

Room A: Paintings after 1600

The two-masted vessel in the centre foreground has the English ensign and flies a St George's cross. In the left middle distance is a man-of-war flying the Union flag and St George's cross.

A preparatory drawing (London, Royal Collection) identifies the view as the mouth of the Thames at Deal, Kent, but the coast there differs from the drawing and is almost certainly imaginary.
