Luca Signorelli: 'Predella: Esther, and Life of Saint Jerome'

Explore the paintings

The subject of Esther before Ahasuerus is told in the apocryphal addition to the Book of Esther (15: 2ff.); the three episodes from the life of Saint Jerome are related in the 'Divoto Transito del Glorioso Sancto Hieronymo' (1490, chapters 22, 26 and 27). From left to right: Saints John the Baptist and Jerome appear to Saint Augustine; Christ and Saint Jerome appear to Sulpicius Severus and two monks; Esther intercedes with Ahasuerus on behalf of the Jews; and Christ and Saint Jerome appear to Saint Cyril.

This was the predella to an altarpiece commissioned jointly by Niccolò Gamurrini and the Compagnia di S. Gerolamo (Company of Saint Jerome) in 1519 for their church in Arezzo. The main panel is now in the Museo Civico, Arezzo.
