The title is traditional, but the scene may not be actually be set in Dieppe. The artist was inspired by Dutch and Flemish painting of the 17th century, and has included figures in historical costume.

Philippe Rousseau also painted this subject, and Isabey is thought to have collaborated with him in his painting 'The Fish Market'.
